ABSTRACT:
In Japan, there have been globally unprecedented attempts to achieve unbundling of power utilities and introduction of more renewable and distributed energy resources. In these circumstances, energy storage is expected to give flexibility to electric power systems, therefore gaining attention. I will be introducing the policy trends around energy storage including demonstration of VPP (Virtual Power Plant) and opening of balancing market, the emergence of new business on energy storage (i.e. opportunities for energy storage market targeting PV after the end of FIT period), and the future direction of energy storage business in Japan.
