Power-to-Heat Applications for Thermal Energy Storage in Scandinavia
Incorporating power-to-heat (P2H) could be an effective strategy to address decarbonization of the heating sector, which dominates final energy use in EU. Nordic Flagship project Flex4RES shows that P2H and heat storage together could stand for two-thirds of all heat in the Nordic-Baltic region. Both short- and long-term heat storage with multiple-week cycles would be necessary. The total storage demand could come up to 1 TWh requiring subsurface storage based on existing technologies.
Peter D. Lund is Professor in Advanced Energy Systems at Aalto University, Finland. He has visiting positions in China and Germany. He has 40 years of experience in energy, including solar, storage, and fuel cells. He pioneered seasonal storage in the 1980s. Dr. Lund is active in senior roles with European Union energy initiatives, he chaired the Advisory Group Energy of European Commission, among others. He has received several awards, lastly the prestigious Jinling Award in China 2016.
